What Will Probably Win the Best Film at the 2018 Oscars?

When it comes to the 2018 Oscars for Best Picture there are some years when everyone is pretty certain which film is going to win and they turn out to be right. There are other times when people are sure a film is going to win but then the award is given to another film entirely. This year the favorite seems to be changing all the time but the current front runner is actually quite surprising. All of the nominees are listed below and are ranked by how likely it is that they will win.

Oscars 2018 Best Film nominees who could make history this year. The Shape of Water, Dunkirk and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri were the most nominated films overall, with 13, 8 and 7 nominations respectively, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll win the biggest prizes of the night, take a look at below.

Phantom Thread

This was one of the most surprising inclusions in the list of nominees and as a result it is considered to be a complete outsider. It has not received a Best Picture nomination in any of the other awards shows that have taken place so far. Films that star Daniel Day-Lewis generally tend to do quite well at the Oscars and there is a chance that he could win the Best Actor award. However, the likelihood of the film winning Best Picture is very low and this is why it is the first film mentioned in this list.

Darkest Hour

All of the focus on Darkest Hour has been about Gary Oldman’s performance as Winston Churchill. For this reason it is fairly unlikely that it will win the Oscar for Best Film. It has not yet won any awards for anything else than the acting and this is a trend that is probably going to contnue at the Oscars. There is also a possibility that it might win the award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. However, the award for Best Picture may just be a step too far for this film considering the competition that it has.

Dunkirk has been nominated for Best Film but it is more likely that it will win the award in one of the technical categories that it has been nominated in. It is the second most nominated film at this year’s awards but a lot of these nominations are in more technical categories. It was nominated for Best Film Editing which is an award that the winner of Best Picture also usually wins. Overall, Dunkirk is probably not going to walk away from the Oscars empty handed but it is not very likely that the Best Picture award will be in this collection.

The Post

The Post should be much higher on this last simply because it was directed by Stephen Spielberg and stars Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep in a legal drama about The Washington Post defending its publication of the Pentagon Papers. However, it has not featured heavily in any of the previous award ceremonies that have taken place this year. It did not win anything at the Golden Globes where it was expected to do quite well. It may not win anything at the Oscars either as it is only nominated for Best Picture and Best Actress, and Frances McDormand is the clear favorite in that category.

Call Me By Your Name

At the moment this romantic drama is falling right in the middle of the pack of potential winners. It has received a lot of nominations at the other ceremonies although it has really won anything as of yet. It cannot be said for certain that it definitely won’t win but there are other films which are stronger contenders. The film that wins Best Picture will usually also will win the Best Director or Best Film Editing or in some cases both. However, this film is not even nominated in either of these categories.

Get Out

The quality of Get Out is immediately made obvious by the fact that horror films are almost never nominated for Best Picture. However, there is far more to this film than just the horror aspect and so it can not completely be discounted as a potential winner. There are a number of social issues that are highlighted by the film and this has people still talking about the film almost a year since it was released. This is the kind of excitement that could just lead to a film winning the Best Picture award although this is probably not going to happen in this case.

Lady Bird

Lady Bird is a very relevant movie at the moment because of the Me Too and Time’s Up campaigns that are running at the moment. All of the major stars of the movie are female and it was also directed by a woman. There was some degree of outcry when Greta Gerwig was overlooked for a Best Director nomination at the Golden Globes. This has not happened at the Oscars and Gerwig is nominated and there have been many occasions when the winner of Best Director goes on to win Best Picture.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

This film was once the frontrunner but it has become embroiled in the race row that has overshadowed the Oscars in the last few years. There has been some backlash over the fact that the issues of a white woman take precedence over abuse of black people by police officers. It has won the Best Picture award at the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Up until a few weeks ago it would have been a dead cert to win the award but now it may just be pipped to the post by the last movie on the list.

The Shape Of Water

There are several things about this film that make it very likely that it will win Best Picture. The Shape of Water is the most utterly ravishing film of the year. It is the most nominated film at the awards with 13 nominations and so it was only one nomination away from equaling the record held by All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land. Although it is yet to win a major award it has won the Critics Choice Award and the PGA. It is nominated for Best Director and Best Film Editing and all three of these awards usually go hand in hand. This is the film that has come out of nowhere and taken everyone by surprise and this surprise could continue if it really does win.
